The whole of Barcelona’s heritage in a map

bigtimebcn

Data from more than 70,000 plots and 3,000 monuments is available in a new, interactive map which visualises information on Barcelona’s heritage.

Under the name of BIG TIME BCN, the project represents a first attempt to reference, in a dynamic cartographic support, the complete database of Barcelona’s Heritage Catalogue. In addition to its most celebrated monuments, such as the Sagrada Familia or Parc Güell, Barcelona has more than 3,000 protected assets. Among these assets are Roman and medieval walls, convents, residential and industrial buildings, parts of certain façades and even street furniture (sculptures, fountains, etc.). The map seeks to visualise these items in an open and flexible format in order to raise awareness about the richness and importance of architectural and urban heritage.

For the first time, complete information on Barcelona’s heritage is available for citizens, professionals and tourists through an accessible and versatile platform. In addition to the City Council’s inventory, the cartography includes other existing databases and archives (most of which are still to be digitized or opened) such as the national Cadastre. At present, this information is available but difficult to use. This map shows the age of 70,000 urban plots contrasted with the city’s architectural heritage. Cadastral information has been compiled and displayed according to the year of construction of each plot while heritage assets have been geolocated and classified depending on its level of protection (A, B or C).

BIG TIME BCN seeks to become a reference tool for historians, designers and students that provides relevant information about Barcelona’s history in a novel and effective way either online or via the Android app (powered byInQBarna). We want people to discover and rediscover the city by making information about the urban environment accessible thus allowing past memories to coexist with the present moment upon the scenery on which citizens forge society.
